HAMWORTHY United’s reserves edged through in the Dorset Premier League Cup after a victory over Poole Borough after extra time.
The second meeting of the sides after Borough won 2-0 at the Moor in August in the league.
The Hammers started the better of the two teams and the away side were rewarded with an early goal in the 10th minute through Archie Southern, tapping in after a squared ball into the box.
Hamworthy’s keeper Harvey Bartlett saved Max Kenway’s penalty in the 22nd minute after Borough’s Ralph Lomas was judged to have been tripped in the box.
The score stayed at 1-0 for the rest of the half, as the Hammers went into the break deservedly ahead.
Hamworthy doubled their lead less than a minute into the second period, Oli Robertson scrambling the ball over the line after a free kick was not dealt with.
But the visitors took their foot off the pedal and Borough came back into the game, with two goals in eight minutes at the end of the 90 forcing the cup tie to extra time.
The hosts got back into the game through an 82nd minute goal as Tony O’Callaghan found the top corner, before Connor Jones completed the comeback in the 90th minute.
The home side pressed for a winner but couldn’t find the goal as the game progressed to an additional half an hour.
Into extra time, Hamworthy edged ahead at the start of the second period in the 110th minute.
Reece Dilling met a cross from the left to fire home, as the Hammers went on to protect their lead and progress into the second round of the Dorset Premier League Cup.
This was also the reserves’ first win of the season.
