AFC BOURNEMOUTH had their Carabao Cup hopes crushed just minutes from time as West Ham scored a late winner to progress to the third round.
Neither side were able to create many chances in the first period, but Cherries went close to opening the scoring on the whistle through a Dango Ouattara back-heel flicked volley.
The second half provided more chances for both sides, but it was the hosts who scored the defining goal just two minutes from time.
Jarrod Bowen surged into the area and was challenged by Hill, but the ball fell to Mohammed Kudus, who shot into Bowen with the ball going past Neto into the back of the net.
Cherries were unable to find the equaliser and headed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.
Andoni Iraola made seven changes from the 11 that drew to Newcastle at the weekend, with Dean Huijsen, Dango Ouattara, Alex Scott, Adam Smith, Luis Sinisterra, Daniel Jebbison and James Hill coming in.
Milos Kerkez, Lewis Cook, Evanilson, Justin Kluivert, Antoine Semenyo, Illia Zabarnyi and Julian Araujo dropped to the bench, alongside ‘keepers Will Dennis and Mark Travers.
Julen Lopetegui named a strong West Ham side, too, with the home side’s starters featuring Jarrod Bowen, James Ward-Prowse and Niclas Fullkrug.
West Ham got the tie underway, with the opening 20 minutes seeing no clear cut chances for either side, although Cherries enjoyed a good amount of possession in the home side’s half.
The visitors registered their first effort on target of the evening on 22 minutes, after some good work from Jebbison to get in behind the defence, and from Sinisterra to challenge Bowen, winning a corner.
The resulting ball in found Senesi at the far post, but his header was straight at Lukasz Fabianski in the West Ham net.
Cherries enjoyed a spell of pressure on the home side’s goal but couldn’t find a clear opening.
Another corner came to Senesi after a failed punch by Fabianski, but Hill could only head wide when found by the Argentine.
Jean-Clair Todibo and Alex Scott both went into the book within minutes of each other for fouls on halfway, with the first half an hour passing without clear chances for either side.
West Ham found their first chances of the match in the final 10 minutes of the opening period, as Fullkrug was open near the penalty spot, but he couldn’t get Wan-Bissaka’s cut back out of his feet for a shot.
The German’s long distance shot moments later was deflected for a corner, as the hosts had a good spell before the break.
A Ward-Prowse free kick from the right then found Fullkrug, but his header was straight at Neto.
It was Cherries, though, who came closest to opening the scoring right on the stroke of halftime.
Hill’s whipped ball in came to Ouattara, and his outrageous backheel flick was well saved down to Fabianski’s right and the sides headed into the break at level pegging.
Both managers went to their benches at the break, with Evanilson replacing Jebbison for Bournemouth and Todibo coming off for Konstantinos Mavropanos for the hosts.
West Ham had the first chance of the half, as Crysencio Summerville shot wide from the edge of the D just a minute into the second period.
It was Cherries that looked most threatening in the first ten minutes of the half, with Evanilson a threat to the defence since coming on.
Ouattara drew a save from Fabianski after the striker was found over the top and cut back, before the Brazilian shot wide moments later.
He was then found running in behind by Senesi, but Ouattara couldn’t meet his ball across goal.
Wan-Bissaka was then booked for a foul on Ouattara, and the resulting Tavernier free kick hit the bar at the far post, as he attempted to find the top corner.
Cherries had another big chance just before the hour mark, as Evanilson played in Tavernier, whose shot was saved by Fabianski after he initially struggled to get the ball out of his feet.
On the hour, Lopetegui brought on Lucas Paqueta and Guido Rodriguez for Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez.
Five minutes later, a dangerous Cherries free kick was blasted over by Ouattara, before Iraola brought on Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert for Tavernier and Sinisterra.
Evanilson was nearly found with a brilliant ball across the box by Ouattara after he was found in behind, but Fabianski came out to smother well before the striker could get the finishing touch.
Into the final 10 minutes, Neto made a good save from a curled Bowen effort.
But the decisive goal came for the home side just two minutes from time.
Bowen was on the end of a neat one-two on the edge of the area and surged into the box but was challenged by Hill.
The ball came to Kudus on the right of the box, and his shot into Bowen beat Neto in the Cherries net.
Replays appeared to show the ball striking the West Ham player’s arm, but there was no VAR to check so the on-field decision stood.
Cherries pushed for the equaliser but weren’t able to fashion a clear-cut chance, and they headed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.
They travel next to Everton on Saturday in the Premier League.
