A YOUTH boxing event supported by a fatal stab victim’s family has boasted ‘fantastic’ success at its first session.
Around 20 young people turned out to The Henry Brown Centre, in West Howe, on November 11 to take part in the C.A.M Club (Changes Are Made).
C.A.M is a charity campaigning against knife crime following the death of Cameron Hamilton in Bournemouth town centre in 2023.
His family has now partnered with West Howe Community Enterprises, which is funding the first six weeks of boxing, as well as youth mentor Marc Smith.
Tracy Jose, Cameron Hamilton’s grandmother and founder of C.A.M, said: “What a fantastic start we have had to C.A.M Club at The Henry Brown Centre in West Howe, seeing 20 young people on the first night enthusiastic and engaging with the coaches Marc, Benji and Alfi.
“The support from the parents, was second to none and feedback after, from both young people and parents, was very positive with all looking forward to next week’s session.”
C.A.M is now looking to raise funds to continue the boxing sessions for a whole year, which cost just £2 per young person.
Tracy said there is a “real need” for a safe and welcoming environment for young people in the community, where they can learn new skills and build confidence to make right choices.
Donations can be made on changesaremade.com or via the charity’s Facebook page and local venues can register interest on changesaremade@outlook.com.
A national police campaign, Operation Sceptre, also launched on November 11 which aims to raise awareness of the consequences of carrying a knife.
“Some people, particularly young people, think they will be safer if they carry a knife, when in reality they may be putting themselves in more danger,” said Tracy.
MP For Bournemouth West, Jessica Toale, attended the first boxing session alongside local councillors Michelle Dower, Cameron Adams and Duane Farr.
Jessica Toale said: "It was great to join Marc and the team at the brilliant Henry Brown Centre in West Howe for the launch of more youth boxing sessions which will open up opportunities for young people from across the area.
“Youth sports, and boxing in particular, is great for building confidence, discipline and focus in kids and I hear so many stories of young people thriving after finding boxing.
“I fully support Tracy's mission to put education and support for young people at the heart of tackling knife crime.
“It's clear from last night's launch, that Changes Are Made (C.A.M) is already having an impact locally."
The boxing sessions will be hosted every Monday at 6pm and participants can ring in advance, or arrive on the day.
Marc added the initial night was “absolutely brilliant” and received “fantastic feedback”.
