A GIANT jellyfish was spotted bobbing underneath Boscombe Pier.

Bournemouth resident Farhad Adeeb was waiting for the sunset on Boscombe Pier when he noticed something peculiar in the water on September 13.

It iss believed to be a large barrel jellyfish.

Farhad said: “I was kind of surprised because I've been working on the seafront for a long time.

“I haven't seen anything like that before.

“Jellyfish are not normally as big as the one I saw, I’ve seen seals, other jellyfish and even sharks.”

A number of barrel jellyfish have been spotted in the sea and washed up on beaches along the Dorset coast over the years.

Dorset Wildlife has said to look but don't touch as jellyfish are capable of stinging even when stranded dead on the shore.

Pet owners are also reminded to keep dogs away, too.

A large barrel jellyfish can weigh up to 35kg; because of their size they are also known as ‘dustbin-lid jellyfish’.

They are most often seen between May and October.

Dorset Wildlife says the presence of the barrel jellyfish in our waters means we could see some leatherback turtles, which feed on jellyfish. Ocean sunfishes could also be spotted.
