TEAMS of 20 pulled together to heave a plane weighing the equivalent of six elephants to raise money for charity.

The annual Dorset Plane Pull returned on Monday, August 26, as 21 teams of men and women pulled a Boeing 737 across 50 metres.

This unique fundraising event based at Bournemouth airport challenged teams to pull the 35,000kg aircraft for 15 different charities.

Pilot and co-founder of the event, Richard Griffin, said: “We are delighted to see the return of many regular charities as well as some newcomers.

“Over 400 people were raring to take on this unique challenge.”

Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised over £304,000 for a variety of charities ranging from large national organisations such as the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Dreamflight and MYTIME Young Carers to locally based charities such as Helpful Hounds, Julia’s House, John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation and Forest Holme Hospice to name just a few.

Dave Potter and his team took on the challenge to raise money for Julia’s House.

Speaking on the feat, Dave said: “It is really tough, especially to start with.

“This is my sixth time doing the plane pull and I am sure it is getting harder each year.”

Trophies will be awarded to the team with the best fancy dress, best team name and the fastest pull time.

National and local businesses have committed to support the day with the Boeing 737 being provided by local aviation firm European Aviation.

Kyrie Griffin, who co-founded the event with Richard, said: “It’s a brilliant community day. There’s a bit of competitiveness which is all in the spirit of raising money for charity."

She added: “A massive thank you to everyone for all their support, to all the volunteers and charities.”
