LIDL’S proposals for a fourth supermarket in Poole have, mostly, won favour of residents.
The budget German supermarket launched plans for a new supermarket in Ringwood Road between Herbert Avenue and Old Wareham Road earlier this year.
Around 100 residents of Parkstone, Newtown and Rossmore have written to BCP Council supporting the new supermarket.
The overwhelming majority of these residents have said they are in support of the new supermarket and drive-through coffee shop.
Resident Keith Mann said the new supermarket would “give shoppers a cost effective store” while Nicola Marsh noted the benefits of doing a shop without the car.
Meanwhile Patricia Hammond said: “There is only one small Tesco Express within walking distance, having a large supermarket would be a great improvement; I would be able to do a weekly shop in one place near home.
“There are a lot of elderly people living in the area who would benefit from having a large supermarket close by.”
And Deborah Moore said is pleased with the potential for new jobs in the area, adding: "The coffee shop drive through will also be a great addition for many on their way to and from work.”
Wendy Hill said: “This shop would support housing estates such as Alderney East, Alderney West, Trinidad and the Bourne.
“Central to everyone and cheaper than the Tesco Express shops dotted around. Too many car dealers around. People don't have that sort of money now.”
Julie Bell said: “Traffic could be a small problem but then traffic is knackered all over Poole anyway. Too many pedestrian traffic lights and road humps and not enough new roads.”
However, Barbara Moore said Ringwood Road is “already too congested” and said there are “enough supermarkets in a small area”.
Simon Norris added: “Can we not make something else in this place other than another supermarket or cafe?
“The entire BCP Council area is seriously lacking entertainment complexes and areas of interest for locals.”
Lidl’s new supermarket would join a long list of the budget supermarket in the area: there’s one in Fleetsbridge, Branksome, Hamworthy and even further down in Ringwood Road in West Howe.
BCP Council will decide on the Ringwood Road application in due course.
