Perfect weather drew big crowds to the ever popular and traditional Ellingham Show near Ringwood on Saturday.

Thousands flocked to the showground in the picturesque surroundings of the Earl of Normanton's Somerley Estate to enjoy a huge range of events including equestrian competitions, dog shows and agility sessions, livestock, classic cars, steam engines, heavy horses, horticulture and arts and crafts.

Two years ago, organisers appealed to owners not to bring their dogs because of the scorching conditions.

This year there was no such issue, with warm weather but plenty of cloud cover all day.

The Ellingham Show - a registered charity - has been running since 1947 and is staffed entirely by a dedicated army of volunteers.

In excess of £20,000 is given to local charities each year from the proceeds.

Throughout the day there were activities in all the rings, with hundreds of participants of different ages and disciplines, from showjumping to 'in hand' classes.

Meanwhile dog agility provides great entertainment for handlers, dogs and spectators.

A challenging fun course tested skilled and novice dogs with rosettes awarded for the fastest times for canine competitors with adult handlers, as well as 12s and under handlers.

The show is always is always a major draw for the local business community and from further afield with in excess of 100 trade stands this year.

In the Arcade Marquee there were more than 40 selling a variety of art and craft products, some offering demonstrations.

Traditionally most of these products are produced at home or in small studios.

One visitor said: “I have been coming for years and never miss it. The show such a friendly, community atmosphere and I hear so many people say that.

“Because it’s volunteer based that really makes a difference. It’s absolutely brilliant and quite frankly unique.”

Chairman, Tom Hasted, said: “This year’s show was blessed with great weather and what we believe was record breaking attendances. It was a really special community event. We have had wonderful feedback and are delighted that we have been able to serve the community and raise a good amount for local charities and good causes.

"Thank you to our sponsors, members, volunteers and to everyone who attended. We couldn’t do it without you.”
