A PUBLIC highway has been closed to facilitate a major £40m housing scheme in Bournemouth.

A closure order has been approved for a stretch of road behind 12 to 14 Cambridge Road, next to where 100 apartments are set to be built.

The order was sought by BCP Council, and approved by Poole Magistrates’ Court on August 7.

As reported, Poole-based Bayview Developments was granted planning consent in June 2022 for the flats at the former highways depot site in Cambridge Road.

The section of road being closed off runs to the edge of this site.

A spokesperson for BCP Council said: “On August 7, Poole Magistrates’ Court approved a closure order for the public highway behind 12 to 14 Cambridge Road in Bournemouth, at the request of BCP Council.

“Planning permission has since been granted to develop the previously unused land into approximately 100 residential flats, addressing a vital need for housing in the area.

“The highway's closure enables this essential redevelopment, as it served no public benefit."
