WITH 90s fashions and trends coming back into the cultural zeitgeist over the past few years, 90s cars were bound to make a comeback too.

And they certainly have done for Bournemouth YouTuber Damian Butt, who has made a film about all that's great about 90s motors.

Damian has reflected on the iconic motors that defined the decade and shaped his younger years on his YouTube channel CarGuysTV.

Set up in 2017, it has more than 113,000 subscribers and its videos have accumulated more than 19million views.

Damian said: “For me, that was the time when car design was at its peak, everything looked different and interesting, and those cars now, they just do it for me.

“My car journey began in 1990, which is when I finally got my tests - I was loose on the world, I was free to drive anything, to own anything and to get out there.”

Moving from car to car, Damian embraced every aspect of driving in the 1990s.

“That was just otherworldly at the time, fast, reliable, you could rev it. It was a beautiful thing,” he said, thinking back to owning a Gen 2 Toyota MR2.

When reflecting on what the 90s had to offer when it came to car culture, he thinks of the 90s as an “era of extreme optimism and creativity,” which led to car design embracing that.

Damian believes that many car lovers of the time were “peacocking”, from exaggerated car customisation, to how they were driven.

“Driving in the 90s was about freedom,” he added. “You had more reliable cars that were more enjoyable to drive.

“If you wanted to go to a car meet, it was also very different. In the 90s, it was basically, do you want to go to the McDonald’s down the road and do massive doughnuts in it?”

He added: “Everyone in the 90s always wanted the GTE. They came in a beautiful purple, they had a digital dashboard on it, it was racy, it was fast - not by today's standards, as slow as a milk float I think, but it was the one to have.”

The short film in which Damian stars, Cars That Made The 90s - Part 1 - Daily Drivers, and featured a 1991 MX-5 Eunos (V-Special) and 1990 MK2 Polo, is a love letter to 90s car culture with over 220k views.

“The 90s for me was just this orgy of stats cars, cars design and possibility.

“It was just like there were limitless possibilities of what you could do. You could have any car, you could do what you wanted.”
